A works cited list (also called a “bibliography” or a “reference list”) appears at the end of an essay and lists all the sources (books, journal articles, etc.) referred to in the essay in alphabetical order by author surname (or the first word of the reference).

FORMATTING:
Works cited lists are commonly formatted with a hanging indent. This means the first line, with the author name, is on the far left, and all the subsequent lines are inset by a tab space, as in the example above.
