Calvin F. Quate
Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics (at Ginzton Lab of Stanford University). Born in Nevada in 1923. Received PhD from Stanford in 1950. One of the inventors of acoustic microscope and atomic-force-microscope (AFM). A member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Sciences. Received IEEE Morris N. Liebmann Memorial award in 1981 and IEEE Medal of Honor in 1988 “for the invention and development of the scanning acoustic microscope”. He (along with Gerd Binnig and Christoph Gerber) won the 2016 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience for the invention of atomic force microscope. He passed away on July 7, 2019 in Menlo Park, California.
