The team members of this research were Abdullah Atalar, Mehmet Ali Tan (now principal analog design engineer at Microsemi, CA), Satılmış Topçu (now Assist Prof at Bilkent), Mustafa Çelik (founder and president of Extreme DA, CA, which was acquired by Synopsys in 2011), Ogan Ocalı (founder of Ocali Inc, known for Tgi3D product), Murat Alaybeyi (now a fellow of Cadence), Cemal Dikmen (now CTO of SS8 Networks), Mustafa N. Yazgan (now software engineer at Google, CA), Suat Ekinci (now at lead design engineer at ASELSAN).

This group has developed a number of programs and subroutines in this area. Most of the methods developed are based on the asymptotic waveform evaluation method. This research and the research group were inspired by the visit of Prof. Dr. Ronald A. Rohrer from the Department of Electrical and Computer Enginnering of the Carnegie-Mellon University to the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Bilkent University and his series of seminars there on the circuit simulation, back in the summer of 1989.

This group produced 5 journal papers, 2 conference papers, 2 Ph.D. dissertations and 3 Master’s theses, 2 software programmes and a library of subroutines on this area. The research activity of this CAD research group has been supported by TUBITAK under the grant no EEEAG-24 with the title Developing Simulation Programs for VSLI Circuits.

Software Developed

In this project two software programmes, PLAWE mostly by Satilmis Topcu and NOWE by Ogan Ocali, have been developed. Also a library of subroutines SIMLIB has been created in C++ mostly by Mustafa N. Yazgan. PLAWE is a circuit simulation programme for the circuits with piecewise linear elements. NOWE is a circuit simulation program for linear and nonlinear circuits with continuous models. PLAWE from ftp://ftp.bilkent.edu.tr/pub/Local/EESoftware/plawe.tar, NOWE from ftp://ftp.bilkent.edu.tr/pub/Local/EESoftware/nowe.tar, and SIMLIB fromftp://ftp.bilkent.edu.tr/pub/Local/EESoftware/simlib.tar can be all retrieved by anonymous ftp.
