Teaching

I am committed to promoting teaching excellence in digital design courses. I am actively involved in curriculum development activities at the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. I designed and implemented several new courses for our faculty. My courses focus on the relevance of digital media to design processes. Students are encouraged to experiment with a variety of digital tools and appraise/compare the affordances of each tool.

I use educational technology extensively to develop student-centric learning in my courses. I aim to serve as a facilitator who creates opportunities for students’ self-controlled learning. I encourage students to “learn to learn” and to use computers in building design with analytical and critical thinking. My courses apply a learning-by-doing approach in which experimentation and hands-on experience are of utmost importance. Students use gained insights and skills in real life problem solving through integrated projects.

I view teaching and research as two inseparable components of my academic activities. They have always nourished one another in a variety of ways. My observations in the classes helped me ask important research questions and I have always used what I have learned from my research to improve my teaching. I have utilized different teaching methods in my courses such as virtual design studio, blended learning, and flipped classroom. I have strived for creating learning environments which effectively accommodate individual differences among learners.

I have taught and co-taught 29 different graduate and undergraduate courses and have received very positive evaluations from the students. Students have felt that they have learned a lot in my courses and acknowledged my enthusiasm in teaching. Since 2003, I have also advised 25-35 students per semester in addition to my course load and my advisees have commonly expressed their appreciation for my knowledge, help and accessibility.
